144-page typescript of reminiscences of army experiences in Arizona from 1878 to the 1880s; slightly different version published as "Apache Days and After" in 1941. Cruse describes his journey from California to Arizona, including arriving for the execution of William Brazelton in Tucson in 1878. He tells of army life, Apache campaigns, Lt. Charles Gatewood, Walter Reed, Adna Chaffee, Will C. Barnes, Victorio, and others. He remembers the Battle of Cibecue Creek, 1881, and the Battle of Big Dry Wash, 1882.

Pioneer Indian fighter, cattleman, legislator, conservationist, and author; Barnes worked for the U.S. Forest Service, in Arizona and New Mexico, for 21 years. Born in Gloucester County, Va., Walter Reed received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1869 and another M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1871. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1876. Reed served in many areas throughout the country, including Fort Lowell, Az., and Baltimore, before becoming professor of bacteriology at the Army Medical School in 1893. Army officer; in command of the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona from 1879 to 1880. In 1882, he led the army in the Battle of Big Dry Wash.
